The island of La Palma is divided into 14 different municipalities. Back in history, these areas were each ruled by a king. These days, it's the local Town Hall ;)
Over time, there have been some changes of course which include both the names of the municipilaity and the boundaries. But perhaps most notably that Tazacorte was recognised its own municipality and no longer under the umbrella of Los Llanos.
Each municipality has its own special qualities and we are very pleased to say that here at Holiday la Palma, we represent accommodation in every area.
So ... let's do it ....!

Santa Cruz
At the heart of this municipality is the historic capital of Santa Cruz de La Palma. With its cobbled streets, historic mansions and flowered-filled balconies you will be walking the same streets as the pirate Francis Le Clerc (Peg Leg) who sacked the city in 1553. However, the city is not just about history as it has some great walks, country cottages and has two excellent sandy beaches to offer.

Garafia
A rural region in the north/north west of La Palma whose municipality also includes the Roque de Muchachos and Observatories at the highest point of the island. This area is particularly unchanged by tourism and there's plenty to explore - caves, natural springs, archaeological museum and the most remote village on the island. Needless to say, apart from the GR130 Camino Real, donkey paths abound.

Puntallana
Located in the east of the island, at the heart of this municipality is the village of Puntallana with its excellent facilities. Saturday is market day with fresh fruit and veg plus handicrafts.
The famous beach of Los Nogales where turtles were once a frequent sighting lies along the coastline and there are some great walks including La Galga and the GR130.
Just 10km away is the capital of Santa Cruz

Puntagorda
Puntagorda in the northwest of the island has a sprawling town with one foot in its rural heritage and the other in the more modern day with select restaurants and a good range of facilities. One of its claims to fame is the weekend market with handicraft products, fruit and vegetables. There are walking paths down to the sea and up into the pine forests in addition to the GR130 Camino Real.

Los Llanos and Puerto Naos
Los Llanos is the largest city on the island, even larger than the capital of Santa Cruz. But although it is a lively place, the centre of the city is completely pedestrianised with the leafy Plaza de España at its heart.
The seaside resort of Puerto Naos is part of the municipality of Los Llanos. With a newly designed promenade it offers a large beach and choice of apartments, restaurants, café/bars and small shops.

Tazacorte
Tazacorte is divided into two parts - the small Pueblo (town) of Tazacorte and the Puerto (port) of Tazacorte. The town is a thriving little community and with an old quarter of narrow, cobbled streets.
The seaside resort of Puerto de Tazacorte is a real hotspot for sunshine and has the feel of a small village. Ideal for your sunshine break with seafood restaurants plus dolphin and whale watching boat trips from the marina.

El Paso
The most central municipality on La Palma and home to La Cumbrecita and the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. At its heart is El Paso, a thriving and bustling little town with a whole range of shops, little bars, a weekend market and other facilities. El Paso is an excellent base for exploring both the east and the west of the island, especially thanks to the tunnels which link both sides of the island.

Barlovento
Located in the north east corner of La Palma, Barlovento is largely an agricultural area. However it has many gems such as the sea pools of La Fajana - three large pools of clear water plus the sea in summer months. Also the 'forest' of dragon trees which cluster around the old Canarian houses at La Tosca. And the recreation park of La Laguna and the cascading terraces which flow down the hillsides.

Tijarafe
The municipality of Tijarafe sits just above the Valley of Aridane in the mid/north west, immediately above the Barranco de Angustias and its swooping road to Tazacorte. With banana plantations below and pine forests above, it's quite a farming community.
However, the small town of Tijarafe which centres around a traditional bodega bar, kiosk bar and shops is a lively place but not at all touristy.

Fuencaliente
The most southerly municipality is Fuencaliente, the name meaning 'Hot Springs' due to volcanic springs in the area. It covers both the east and west of the tip of La Palma. As a volcanic area, there are the remains of the Teneguia and San Martin volcanoes plus information centre. The main town is Los Canarios which is perhaps a little old-fashioned but interesting because of it. There are some sandy coves, salt pans and the pine forest all in the area.

Breña Alta and Breña Baja (Las Breñas)
'Upper' Breña and 'Lower' Breña are to the south of Santa Cruz, both occupying upper and lower areas - a bit confusing! However, their main claim to fame is the beach and tourist area of Los Cancajos with its range of hotels and apartments. The sea is very clear and excellent for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
The Breñas also include the farming area of San Isidro with its 100 year old Dragon Tree and the 16th century church at San Pedro.

Mazo
The municipality of Mazo in the south east is known for its history, culture and handicrafts. The town of Mazo has many cobbled streets which rise and fall from the main street. This is also where you'll find the embroidery museum and the weekend market. There is also a wonderfully restored windmill and the Belmaco caves with pre-Hispanic rock engravings. At Easter the streets are covered in petals and seeds to form a tableaux.

Los Sauces and San Andrés y Sauces
The main town is Los Sauces which is a busy little little town. There are two main plazas and an impressive church with large copper dome. At sea level is San Andres with cobbled streets - probably the prettiest village on the island. There is also the beach of the Puerto de Espindola and rum distillery with museum. For walks and nature, Los Tilos Laurisilva forest was the first area of La Palma to be declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
